Evil Wordle

Guess the five-letter word. Except there is no word: it changes after every guess to dodge you.

A word game with an adversary. The imp never commits to an answer; after each guess it keeps the biggest pile of words your colours could still mean. Shrink its hiding spots, corner it, and challenge your friends.

The brief it was built from

Bring the evil mode of the Sigmordle Discord bot to the web as a standalone mini game: no sign-up, unlimited matches, progress kept in the browser, results shareable on social media, and a clear how-to-play.

How it works, honestly

What it runs on
  • The dictionary: the same 5,917 five-letter words the Sigmordle bot uses, for both guesses and hiding spots
  • The colours follow Wordle's rules exactly, repeated letters included; checked against the bot's own scoring on 200,000 word pairs
  • The adversary is the bot's rule: avoid all-green, keep the largest pile, then show the fewest colours
  • Every number on screen (hiding spots, bits of information, the sharpest guess) is computed live from that dictionary
Limits & choices
  • Ties between equally large piles are settled by a coin toss seeded per match, so two matches with the same guesses can end differently
  • The dictionary includes some obscure words (the imp likes to hide behind them); Peek exists for that, and marks your result
  • 'Sharpest guess' means the guess that leaves the smallest worst case, searched over the whole dictionary; it is not a full game-tree search
  • Stats live in this browser only (local storage, or a cookie if storage is blocked); clearing site data clears them

What it teaches

  • How an adversary turns a guessing game into minimax: you are always playing against the worst case
  • Why the best guess shrinks the biggest pile rather than chasing letters
  • What a bit of information is, counted on every guess as log2 of before over after
