A family trip across east Bengaluru played out on the real map: the 12 signals, the Tin Factory bottleneck, the drop-off, the first twenty minutes inside and the trip home. Change the hour, the weather or the mode and watch the day change.

The brief it was built from

Plan a Saturday trip to a big mall across town: two adults and a toddler, starting from a busy neighbourhood. Show the route, the key junctions and waits, what to watch out for and what to carry, and compare a cab with the metro.

What is real, and what is a scenario

Real data
  • The road route, its turns and its 7.4 km length: OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, fetched 15 Oct 2026
  • Every road, 3,282 building footprints, parks and water along the route: OpenStreetMap
  • The 12 traffic signals on the route and where they are: OpenStreetMap
  • The Purple Line viaduct and its six stations from Indiranagar to Singayyanapalya: OpenStreetMap
  • The mall's outline, about 1,000,000 sq ft over four floors and about 1,700 car parks: OpenStreetMap and Wikipedia
  • The typical pace of Bengaluru traffic, 34 min 10 s per 10 km in 2024: TomTom Traffic Index
Scenario & assumptions
  • Drive times scale the city average by 0.8 at 11 am, 0.9 at 3 pm and 1.3 at 6 pm; real traffic on the day will differ
  • A shower makes the drive 30% slower and the cab wait twice as long
  • Tin Factory gets almost twice its share of the delay, from its reputation as a bottleneck, not from measured data
  • Cab pickup takes 6 minutes when dry; a metro train comes about every 10 minutes, so the average wait is 5; each stop takes about 2.2 minutes
  • Walking pace with a toddler is 58 m a minute, 50 in the rain
  • Building heights are estimated at 2 to 5 floors where OpenStreetMap has none (most buildings)
  • The calm and toddler meters are illustrative, not measured

What you leave with

  • Where the trip is slow (Tin Factory) and where it is merely stop-start (Swamy Vivekananda Road)
  • That the metro takes about the same time whatever the traffic, and the walks become the part to plan
  • When to bring out the snack and the toy so the toddler lasts the ride
  • A packed-bag checklist and a plan for the first twenty minutes inside
