The trough, and what it demands

  • The dataset was certified, discoverable and correct — and still stopped the work for six days, because the masked column had no named owner and the request had no bounded SLA.
  • The answer is on view 38: an owner is a person, not a team, certification expires, and the access request carries a one working day approval target. A catalogue without those is a directory.

Decisions

  • Masked columns show the reason for the mask and the person who can lift it, rather than silently returning nulls.
  • Sample execution from Design Studio runs under the requester's own entitlements, so what they see in the sample is what they will get in the report.

Assumptions

  • Ninety report authors, of whom about a third build customer reports in any quarter.
  • Power BI connects by DirectQuery for operational reports and by scheduled import for aggregate ones; import mode is capped to the interactive pool's row limit.
