Definition

Progression in architecture is progression in scope and judgement, not in the number of technologies known.

What actually changes with seniority

The technical skill required does not decrease. What increases is the proportion of the job that is communication, judgement and developing other people — which is why strong engineers frequently find the transition uncomfortable.

What is actually rewarded

  • Outcomes, not activity. Systems delivered, problems avoided, costs removed, teams made faster.
  • Judgement, demonstrated by decisions that aged well and by predictions that came true.
  • Making others effective. At senior levels this dominates: an architect who improves ten engineers' decisions has more effect than one who makes excellent decisions alone.
  • Owning the hard problems nobody else will take.
  • Communication, because a good decision that is not adopted has no value.

What is not rewarded as much as people expect

Knowing many technologies. Being right in arguments. Producing documents. Being present in every discussion.

What to do deliberately

  • Seek scope, not title. Take responsibility for something larger than currently assigned; the title follows.
  • Write. Publicly or internally. It builds credibility and forces the thinking.
  • Deepen the fundamentals, which do not expire, rather than accumulating tool familiarity that does.
  • Get feedback on judgement, not just on output. "Was that the right call, and how would you have reasoned about it?"
  • Keep building. Architects who stop touching systems lose the credibility the role depends on within a couple of years.
  • Record what you were wrong about, which is how judgement gets calibrated.

The honest difficulty

The work becomes less measurable. A senior engineer can point at shipped systems. An architect's best work is frequently problems that did not happen, which is genuinely hard to demonstrate — and which is why outcomes and stated predictions matter more at this level, not less.
